The Long Dark Coal

The Long Dark Coal

The No.3 Coal Mine is a transition region between Crumbling Highway and Desolation Point. The interior of the mine is pitch black and is next to impossible to navigate without a light source. If you’ve spent much time in The Long Dark, you’ve more than likely searched for a detailed map of all the regions. Hinterland Studio doesn’t provide any in-game maps, but a community member by the name of Whiteberry has created the most detailed maps one could ask for in The Long Dark.

Specifically I'm wondering about the coal in the cave at the Camping Area in Milton.I'm planning to start heading there at regular intervals to gather up the coal. Life at Trapper's is great.

Im at day 115 on a Loper run there. I'm camping out back in my snow shelter a lot.But I foresee a day when the snow shelter is not warm enough, or rather, a fire can't be sustained outside often enough to avoid the Cabin Fever.

So I'm planning to start gathering a big pile of coal in that cave for the future. Getting there is a pain, so I don't want to go more than I have to.

And so, I ask-Anyone know precisely how long it takes for that coal to respawn? Let's drop back here for a second and defocus on the coal. Even on Interloper, if you can get clothes at say +20C warmth combined with the +28C cave, you'll be fine sleeping thru an early morning blizzard with a bear roll and possibly even a bedroll in good shape.Even if the air temp plummets to -55C, it would only do so for a few hours, and your clothes, reg bedroll, and cave would be in the +51C or higher. But even if you don't want to risk that and start a 10hour fire, a 10 hour fire is going to be hot enough to keep you warm no matter what your fuel is.

Hell, with a 10h fire you could take your clothes OFF and sleep in a reg bedroll.Really you should save your coal for when you need a short hot fire generally out in the wilderness. Or forging. With a bearroll in poor condition, I sleep 10h straight at the back of a cave in 20C clothes with no worries on Day 225 in Interloper. And it's not going to get much colder, just worse overall weather patterns.

Thx for the wisdom jswilliams.I'm trying to plan for the day that week long blizzards hit. In Tyber's 1400 day post he said that's what he is facing.I assumed that the temps would fall so far that coal would be necessary.

If I'm wrong that's awesome.Hauling tons of crap accross maps is a drag. That's one thing I'm loving about Trappers - the proximity of fallen branches and sticks. If I don't have to make any cross map coal hauls, I certainly won't.I am going to have to go in search of more birch at some point though. I hope that one little grove of birch up the rope in CH is there. Originally posted by:Let's drop back here for a second and defocus on the coal. But birch is scattered all over the world, sometimes on maps you have no interest in basing at, so I get them to my bases as a priority.

And some maple.Example. Me personally I have no interest in a late-game or even long-term base at The Skeg, Devil's Bowl, Milton proper, so all of those saplings my goal is to get them to trapper's/camp office. Or BR's Hunting Lodge but I also don't want to late-game commit to a dead end corner purely for boredom's sake. Now I may haul some scrap metal from BR to Trapper's, but probably after churning most of it into hooks to lessen the weight. Then consume all the scrap I find at Spence's into tools and arrows.Or die, which also solves a lot of late-game logistics.

I assumed that the temps would fall so far that coal would be necessary. If I'm wrong that's awesome. That's interesting, I don't think it's the low temps that are the problem, but blizzards will be, I'm seeing longer blizzards even at day 560, I have to stay inside longer making CF more of a possibility. The problem will be the inability to go out and gather food and/or being stuck inside for CF. There are a couple of things to consider for a very 'Long Dark Haul'1 - Hoarding Food and Water, never stop socking up, there will come a day where you'll need it.2 - Access to a Workbench, for bow/arrows.3 - Avoiding Cabin Fever at all cost.4 - Animal spawns will be fewer and fewer the longer you go, so fishing might become necessary and stock up as much food as you can.5 - Blizzards will last longer.6 - Be a minimalist. Use as fewer resources as possible, like mending clothes when you don't need to and saving cloth. Day 145 -Everything is good, EXCEPT, Ive realized that Im burning through my arrows too fast.Made 50 arrowheads, and I'm down to 36. The ones I've lost were in regions I just couldnt stop to go chase down the wolf.

But the 14 arrowheads are not the problem. Its the Birch.I've been killing every wolf I see. Its been LUPICIDE. I've loved it!

But Im realizing I can't keep doing that if I want to have any arrows for late game.So I dismantled my snow shelter out back of Trappers, packed up all the essentials, brought in my rabbit snares, and I'm on a mission for birch. I'm hoping to hit a small cache on CH.

Then Im going to go to PV and de-forest the place.I've decided not to use an arrow on a wolf unelss Im going to harvest it, that is if I can just drop the decoy and avoid him.Really♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥at myself for the 20 or so shafts Ive used when I didn't need to. Gonna bite me if I live long enough.Since Fleurdyllis and jswilliams hooked me up with the advanced trapping science I really havnt needed to hunt deer at all. The rabbits are more meat than I can keep up with.Since crafting all my deer stuff and getting a few more skins I've stopped.

Its been a month since I bagged a deer.I wonder to what extent the rabbits will become scarce in late game?Any late game Trappers' residents out there witnessed any decline in rabbit availability?Oh, and one more question - Will this flare gun kill a bear? There's conflicting info out there.
